While visiting Upper Mesa Falls the other day, a NFS volunteer recommended the drive up to Sawtelle Peak. Sawtelle Peak is one of the tallest mountains in the area. It has a well maintained road because the FAA has a radar station on the top of the peak. After some light morning showers, we headed out. The drive was easy, except for some wash-boarding on sections of the road. When we reached the top our GPS showed an elevation of 9,890 feet. The 360 degree view was spectacular! We have some additional pictures in the Yellowstone NP album (starting with a picture of the radar installation).
Can you believe it? Y is standing on top of the world.
Henrys Lake is in the background. The dip in the mountain range on the right is Targhee Pass. It crosses the Continental Divide into Montana and onto Yellowstone NP.
We picked up a couple of geocaches near the top and few more around the lake. There is so much to see in the area that we've decided to stay in Island Park until Sunday the 27th.
