Geyer Basins - Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Today was our first day in Yellowstone National Park. Because of road closures, for construction, we decided to do the geyser basin area, which includes Old Faithful. We brought along information on about a dozen Earthcaches that can be found in the park. The Earthcaches prompt you to stop along the way to view and learn about some of the park's geology. One interesting note, YNP has 1/5 of the world's geysers in one square mile (about 140).

We spent about 3 1/2 hours in the Old Faithful area. We saw Old Faithful erupt three times and walked around the boardwalk viewing a number of geysers and pools.

We made several stops along the road for pictures or to read informational signs. We also saw cow elk and bison grazing along the banks of Firehole River.
We drove the Firehole Canyon Road which includes several spectacular falls made by the Firehole River. Distances are great in the park...we drove about 110 miles today and only covered a small portion of the park.

The Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin.

It looks inviting, but the water is scalding hot!
